My article, “For Good Digital Images, Know Your DPI,” appears in the Spring 2008 issue of the NQA’s Quilting Quarterly. I should have called it “for good digital prints …” – as images doesn’t necessary mean printed images. Hindsight!
Often the terms “dpi” (dots per inch) and “ppi” (pixels per inch) are used interchangeably. I’ve caught myself doing this too. However, important to understand is that they are not the same thing. The article explains that a dot of ink does not equal one pixel that displays on a monitor or contained within a digital document. Why? Because pixels are variable in size, and often more than one dot of ink is needed to represent one pixel of a digital document. The article elaborates and goes into how the dots/pixels work to create quality prints. I’ll also detail this information in my new book, “Digital Essentials” coming this fall.
