I’m thrilled that my Artifications quilt is on the cover of the latest issue of The Professional Quilter magazine. The magazine is the quarterly publication of The International Association of Professional Quilters. I’ve been writing the technology forum column for the magazine for over 15 years (it’s hard for me to believe it’s been that long).  If you’re not a member, check it out.  It’s not just for quilt makers, but mixed media artists, too.  I’m also happy to share that I’m working on an eBook compilation of columns, all updated where needed, and selling it my website at some point in 2013.  Let me know if you’re interested, and I’ll keep you posted.

International Quilt Festival Quilt Scene is in bookstores now.  My quilt, “Monarch: About to Fly” is included in a selection of work from the Quilts: A World of Beauty show.

I also have work in the Winter 2013 issue of Art Quilting Studio, which will be in bookstores on December 1st.  It’s a lovely issue with lots of great work by artists such as Sandra Meech, Gerrie Congdon, Arlee Bar, Ludmila Aristova, Natalya Aikens, Rayna Gilman, and others.

I’ve had some email asking why no posts lately.  I was away at Quilt Festival, and then home in central NJ dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.  I’ll be posting more soon!

I was honored to have a quilt included in the premier issue of The Quilt Life earlier this year (in an article about digital imagery on fabric).  The magazine is a new publication from the American Quilter’s Society that comes from Ricky Tims and Alex Anderson and is somewhat in the style of Mark Lipinski’s Quilter’s Home, which sadly ended late 2009. In the current issue (August 2010), I have a three page article called, “Friending and Tweeting, a Beginners Guide to Facebook and Twitter.”  I have something coming in a future issue, too.

I am very pleased to have an article in the November/December issue of Quilting Arts entitled “Preserve & Protect, Adventures in Quilt Storage.”  Quilting Arts is one of my favorite publications, and I am extremely honored to have work in three consecutive issues.

This is another beautiful issue.  Jane LaFazio’s organza work is particularly etheral, and I enjoyed the profile of Britta Ankenbauer of Germany.  Joanie San Chirico makes us from NJ proud.  Jannie Palmer Moore has a good article on “Fast ‘Green’ Fabric” using soy wax.  If you enjoy using soy wax, you shoud also check out Rayna Gillman’s Create Your Own Hand-Printed Cloth. It’s a must-have.

Part two of the Principles of Digital Design article that I wrote for Quilting Arts is now out in their August/September issue.  The issue also has an article by my friend Rayna Gillman called Deconstructing the Screen.  Rayna also has out a new book with C&T Publishing called Create Your Own Hand Printed Cloth.  I have the book, it’s a must-have, and I’ll do a write-up about it soon.  Claire Fenton, an artist that we created a website for, also has an article in it called The Test of Time — good stuff, on rusting fabric.  And Robbi Joy Eklow, another artist we did a website for, has in it her regular column The Goddess of the Last Minute.  The magazine is a gem, and I’m happy to be part of it.

The first of my two-part article, “Digital Design Principles” is now out in the June/July 2008 (issue 33) issue of Quilting Arts Magazine. It’s an 8 page article that is written for someone interested in exploring design principles using an image editing program but doesn’t know where to begin. It covers some information on resolution, setting up a work area, a basics in using layers, scale and rotation, moving and scaling, adding solid colors, and more — all working from one image.

It’s always an honor to be included in this beautiful publication. Quilting Arts Magazine sells directly from their website, or you can look for the issue on newstands.

My article, “For Good Digital Images, Know Your DPI,” appears in the Spring 2008 issue of the NQA’s Quilting Quarterly. I should have called it “for good digital prints …” – as images doesn’t necessary mean printed images. Hindsight!

Often the terms “dpi” (dots per inch) and “ppi” (pixels per inch) are used interchangeably. I’ve caught myself doing this too.  However, important to understand is that they are not the same thing. The article explains that a dot of ink does not equal one pixel that displays on a monitor or contained within a digital document. Why? Because pixels are variable in size, and often more than one dot of ink is needed to represent one pixel of a digital document.  The article elaborates and goes into how the dots/pixels work to create quality prints. I’ll also detail this information in my new book, “Digital Essentials” coming this fall.

I received the Premiere issue of Somerset Studio’s new annual publication “Digital Studio.” I’m very pleased to share that my RGB.self quilt appears on page 110. The new publication is 144 color pages. While it’s geared more digital scrapbooking, there are many inspiring images in the book. The $9.96 issue hits the newsstands on March 1st. The other day, talented quiltmaker Sarah Smith congratulated me on having my name appear on the cover of Mark Lipinkski’s Quilter’s Home magazine. Low and behold, it is there, on the cover of the March/April 2008 issue!

I met Mark while at Quilt Festival this past November. He is incredibly popular, with a swarm of people around him constantly. It’s easy to see why. He oozes an infectious enthusiasm that seems to get everyone near him happy and laughing. Me included! My business partner, Derry, and I were chatting, laughing, and when we left concluded that he is a person we’d like to sit down and share a tea with!

Later he asked me what I was reading. And my answer is what appears on page 69 “What we’re reading.” Curious? Check out the magazine. Far more important than what I’m reading, however, is what he’s writing. His “mark my word” column is a keeper. He addresses the stereotyping and assumptions many make about quilt makers — judging people by “their covers” so to speak. He writes, “… Here’s the problem: These morons don’t take a sec to apply a little historical perspective. They don’t realize, for example, that the graying, slightly padded 68-year old quilter in front of them could easily have been dancing naked at Woodstock (She was in her 20s at the time). …” He also asks how we contribute to the stereotype and suggests what we can do to break it.   Good, good stuff, Mark! Bravo!

In the Feb/March 2008 issues of Quilting Arts Magazine, fiber artist Lyric Kinard has a very information article on framing textiles. Lyric has also posted expanded directions, with photos, on her website here. She covers work mounted on matboard and framed, mounted on stretcher bars, mounted on Plexiglas, mounted on a gallery wrapped canvas, and matted and framed. Thank you Lyric!

While in Houston this fall, I had a delicious breakfast with Jean Ann Wright, the new editor of the National Quilting Association’s quarterly publication, The Quilting Quarterly. She said, “I hope it’s okay, but we’re going to use your quilt (Squared Illusions 6) on our next cover.” It certainly is okay! Here’s the cover. It’s the Winter 2007 issue which will be out sometime in January (probably should be the Winter 2008 issue <g>). I’m thrilled with it. Learn more about the National Quilting Association here.
