Adding hand stitching to Artifications

Artifications @2011 Gloria Hansen
I made this piece, Artifications, in 2011.  The inspiration for it came from the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California.  I remember reading a review in the NY Times describing it as a place where “computer artifacts come alive.” Last year when Derry and I went to MacWorld, we took a train to Mountain View to visit the Museum.  I totally loved it, took many pictures, and agreed that the artifacts certainly did seem to come alive.

Although I did have the quilt on exhibit at the Houston IQA show this past fall, it never quite felt finished to me.  In looking at the piece, my eye kept going to some of the curved lines formed in the grid.   After some thought, I decided to remove the top and bottom hanging pockets and some of the facing.  I then used a variegated perle cotton thread, and began hand stitching various curved lines.

The quilt came with me this year to MacWorld where I worked on it in my room at night.  It feels like it went full circle, ending where the inspiration began.  The piece is now at the NJ Quilt Festival where it will be on display this weekend.

This quilt is wonderful. The work that had to have gone into it is mind boggling. Wish I could see it “in person”. Thanks for showing it here.

This is fabulous. I love the contrast of the handstitching to the machine stitching.
