{"id":3454,"date":"2010-03-15T10:12:51","date_gmt":"2010-03-15T14:12:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/?p=3454"},"modified":"2010-03-16T10:47:23","modified_gmt":"2010-03-16T14:47:23","slug":"quilt-visions-finally","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/?p=3454","title":{"rendered":"Quilt Visions &#8211; finally!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3456\" title=\"QV\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/QV.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"57\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/QV.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/QV-300x38.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the year, I entered <em>Quilt Visions 2010: No Boundaries<\/em>, an exhibition of art quilts that will be on display October 24th &#8211; March 13, 2011 at the Oceanside Museum of Art in California.<\/p>\n<p>I have never been accepted into that show despite years of trying.\u00a0 I briefly looked through some of my files to see if I could find the year I received my first rejection letter from them.\u00a0 No luck, which is in all likelihood because I tossed it.\u00a0 Having enough rejection letter to cover a wall can get a bit depressing.<\/p>\n<p>This time around\u00a0 I entered two works:\u00a0 &#8220;Circles Collide,&#8221; which won an award at the IQA show in Houston, and &#8220;It&#8217;s Time,&#8221; a piece I finished right before the deadline and which I made specifically to enter into the show.\u00a0 My thinking was if it wasn&#8217;t accepted, which I suspected it wouldn&#8217;t be, I&#8217;d enter it into other venues.<\/p>\n<p>This past rainy Saturday afternoon, I received in the mail a &#8220;fat&#8221; envelope from Visions.\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;It&#8217;s Time&#8221; was accepted.\u00a0 I cried.\u00a0 My red, blotchy face made my husband cry.\u00a0 My business partner was on iChat\/video with me and he started to tear up.\u00a0 It&#8217;s absolutely silly to let a show have such weight, but it does.\u00a0 There were only 40 works selected from 600 entered.\u00a0 Clearly very low odds.\u00a0 I am absolutely thrilled that this time around the jurors saw something in my work that made it appropriate for their selection.<\/p>\n<p>After posting my acceptance on the QuiltArt list, I received emails from others.\u00a0 Some were also accepted, and thrilled.\u00a0 Others shared they had tears, but because they didn&#8217;t make it.\u00a0 Even with the full knowledge that the jurying process is extremely subjective, I feel their pain.<\/p>\n<p>Another artist from a group I&#8217;m in shared a quote from a Lancaster County, PA newspaper.\u00a0 In an article interviewing Olympic skater Johnny Weir (who lives there),\u00a0 he was asked, &#8220;What does winning an Olympic medal mean to you?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">He replied, <em>\u201cFigure skating medals aren\u2019t won by a stopwatch or number of goals scored. We\u2019re judged by strangers. I can\u2019t control winning a medal. What I can control is competing to the best of my ability and leaving a piece of my soul on the ice. That\u2019s what\u2019s important to me \u2013 leaving my soul and opening my heart for my fans. An Olympic medal would be icing on top of my cake, but in no way does a medal de\ufb01ne me.
