{"id":3172,"date":"2009-11-18T23:40:00","date_gmt":"2009-11-19T03:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/?p=3172"},"modified":"2009-11-18T23:40:00","modified_gmt":"2009-11-19T03:40:00","slug":"quiltsartquilts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/?p=3172","title":{"rendered":"Quilts=Art=Quilts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.schweinfurthartcenter.org\/exhibits\/current.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3173\" title=\"Q=A=Q\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/QAQ.jpg\" alt=\"Q=A=Q\" width=\"430\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/QAQ.jpg 430w, https:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/QAQ-268x300.jpg 268w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 430px) 100vw, 430px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In today&#8217;s mail I received a packet from the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center containing a pile of postcards advertising the Quilts=Art=Quilts show.\u00a0 I am thrilled that my quilt is one of the five included in the card.\u00a0 I&#8217;m also very honored that my quilt won the award for machine workmanship.\u00a0 The award makes me chuckle a bit and hammer home the years flying by.<\/p>\n<p>When I learned to quilt, I hand pieced and hand quilted everything &#8212; even a log cabin wallhanging.\u00a0 It took some time to start using a treadle machine.\u00a0 In those days I drew the sewing lines the same way that I did for hand piecing.\u00a0 While I eventually started adding the 1\/4&#8243; seam allowance, I quickly adapted to paper piecing because I never was good at sewing a straight line.\u00a0 Although I used a computer to help me design quilts from the early 1990s on, I continued hand quilting until about 2001.<\/p>\n<p>Back then I used a number 12 needle, threading it with ease, and often working into the wee hours of the night without any eye strain.\u00a0 The hand quilting I did on my piece called <em>Awakenings<\/em> (which is my gallery) is the best I achieved, and I doubt I have the hand dexterity to achieve those teeny stitches again.\u00a0\u00a0 Eventually in 2001 I finally ventured into using a machine for quilting a large wallhanging, <em>Going in Circles<\/em>.\u00a0 While I struggled with it, I was honored that the quilt won some awards, although my critiques said my machine quilting needed improvement.\u00a0 It took several more quilts and plenty of small journals to finally get comfortable with the machine.<\/p>\n<p>Today threading a number 12 needle take several stabs with the thread.\u00a0 At first I was sure my needles were defective because I couldn&#8217;t see the hole.\u00a0 It was my husband who thought I might need to get my eyes examine.\u00a0 Funny, I never ever considered it.\u00a0\u00a0 I now wear reading glasses.\u00a0 And, I now love machine work.\u00a0 My machine has a bright light attached to it, I have reading glasses on while sewing, and I take breaks to give my eyes a rest.\u00a0 While it&#8217;s always been far more important to me to have work recognized for its visual appeal, winning the award for\u00a0 machine workmanship\u00a0 is a first for me.\u00a0 And it&#8217;s certainly been a long time in the making.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on the Quilts=Art=Quilts show, visit their website <a href=\"http:\/\/www.schweinfurthartcenter.org\/exhibits\/current.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.
