{"id":1147,"date":"2008-12-29T23:29:25","date_gmt":"2008-12-30T03:29:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/?p=1147"},"modified":"2008-12-29T23:29:25","modified_gmt":"2008-12-30T03:29:25","slug":"the-big-clean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/?p=1147","title":{"rendered":"the Big Clean"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday\u00a0 I decided to clean my workroom to make way for the new year.\u00a0 I continued right through most of today.\u00a0 While cleaning, I found myself getting nostalgic while reminiscing about this or that.\u00a0 I&#8217;m often amazed at how much time has gone by when I discover things in the back of various cabinets.\u00a0 I found an embroidered name tag I used when attending Embroiderer&#8217;s Guild of America meetings.\u00a0 I was a teenager, and it had my maiden name on it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1156 aligncenter\" title=\"ribbons1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/ribbons1.jpg\" alt=\"ribbons1\" width=\"420\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/ribbons1.jpg 420w, https:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/ribbons1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve also had bunches of ribbons in various piles, and several pinned on different walls. I decided to put them all into boxes lined with acid-free tissue paper.\u00a0 I started counting them but stopped after hitting 200.\u00a0 The exact count isn&#8217;t important.\u00a0\u00a0 Looking at them now makes me feel sort of sad.\u00a0 I remember years ago my husband&#8217;s aunt had many things precious to her &#8212; various cards, awards, and other things &#8212; lovingly wrapped and stored.\u00a0 I also remember how everything was heaved into the trash after she died.\u00a0 Witnessing the nonchalant way it was deemed garbage made a lasting impression on me.\u00a0\u00a0 Right then I realized that someday my important things would have the same fate.\u00a0 But, nothing lasts forever!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1157 aligncenter\" title=\"ribbons2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/ribbons2.jpg\" alt=\"ribbons2\" width=\"420\" height=\"279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/ribbons2.jpg 420w, https:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/ribbons2-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I also found myself looking at the awards and remembering how happy I was after winning this one or that one.\u00a0 I looked at a Best of Show from the NJ State Fair and remembered how my father-in-law actually cried when he saw I won the ribbon.\u00a0 I think that&#8217;s the first and only time something I did ever moved him to tears!\u00a0 I looked at a series of ribbons from a NJ State fair.\u00a0 I won so much that year &#8211; two best of shows (one for quilting and one for embroidery) and several trophies ( best design,\u00a0\u00a0 best color,\u00a0 best original design, and for grand prize).\u00a0 I was young, maybe 21 or 22, and those wins had me drunk with pride.\u00a0 I looked at my first blue ribbon from the American International Quilting Association show.\u00a0 It was 1994, years before the organization changed its name to the International Quilting Association.\u00a0 I remember someone calling me to tell me the news, and how I nearly jumped through the phone to call my husband and my then best friend (who has since moved and we totally fell out of touch).\u00a0\u00a0 I was fortunate to win a couple firsts from the Schweinfurth Quilts=Art=Quilts show.\u00a0 I went with Rich to one of the awards ceremonies.\u00a0 That was the first time I went to such an event.\u00a0 Memory after memory.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1155\" title=\"ribbons3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/ribbons3.jpg\" alt=\"ribbons3\" width=\"420\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/ribbons3.jpg 420w, https:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/ribbons3-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But, I packed them into very large, deep boxes.\u00a0 I will add that I have some a handful of ribbons in my office that are staying up!\u00a0 They include\u00a0 the 2007 Master Award for Innovative Artistry from IQA, the 2008 Best Wall award from AQS, a 2008 first from the Lancaster Quilters Heritage show (that&#8217;s a show my old best friend and I went to for years!), and the 2008 IQA shows first in the digital division.\u00a0 Those I want them hanging around.<\/p>\n<p>I continued cleaning, filling two extra large Priority Mail boxes with fabric that I know I won&#8217;t use.\u00a0 It included a lot of commercial fabrics and stuff I&#8217;ve painted or dyed that I decided to pass on.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll be shipping the boxes to my sister-in-law in California.\u00a0 It will be a surprise to her unless she happens to read about it here.\u00a0 I also decided to send her some books, too.\u00a0 She&#8217;s an excellent quilter, but more traditional than I.\u00a0 I then refolded everything.\u00a0 On the back wall are all fabrics that I either painted, dyed, or airbrushed.\u00a0 The larger bookcase is filled with commercial fabrics, lots of the hand-dyed Hoffmans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1163 aligncenter\" title=\"studio1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/studio1.jpg\" alt=\"studio1\" width=\"420\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/studio1.jpg 420w, https:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/studio1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The wire baskets and other storage things under part of the sewing table aren&#8217;t visible in this picture, but it&#8217;s now all organized too.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1162\" title=\"studio2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/studio2.jpg\" alt=\"studio2\" width=\"420\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/studio2.jpg 420w, https:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/studio2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1161 aligncenter\" title=\"studio3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/studio3.jpg\" alt=\"studio3\" width=\"420\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/studio3.jpg 420w, https:\/\/www.gloriahansen.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/studio3-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll be installing (with the help of dh) a proper design wall, hopefully this week, across the one of the entire walls (partially showing above).\u00a0 But, even if that doesn&#8217;t happen until the new year, I have large insulation boards that I&#8217;ll put up against that wall to work on in the interim.
