Refracted Lily – 1st in IQA show!
I’m pleased to share the news that my quilt, Refracted Lily, won first prize in the digital imagery category at the International Quilt Association show in Houston, Texas. This quilt is based on one of the many images I took of a water lily during a partly sunny day. When the sun was out, it was glistened off the water, often with short bursts of color. When the sun went behind the clouds, it was dreary looking. In this piece, I tried to merge my love of taking photos with my enjoyment of using geometric shapes in artwork.
The face of the piece is a digital print done on cotton sateen using an Epson 7900 Stylus Pro with archival pigment ink. I also used colored pencils/pastel-crayons and dense stitching to emphasize the color and illusion of depth.

WOW….always fun to have a winner, but your explaination of sun and part sun and the way you did it – in “borders” so to speak – is very interesting to me. And now I see what / where the refracted part came from.

Gloria
I am particularly attracted to the asymmetrical grid design as well as the asymmetrical use of color. The unexpected jump from one color to another keep s the eye moving easily through the design. Another great exploration of digital photography and inkjet printing by you; It is clear to me why the judges selected your piece. The oft used water lily has come into the digital age with a splash!

Congratulations! That is wonderful! Are you saying that all of the color is from colored pencils and pastels and the grey/black/white from the print? Your use of color and geometric shape certainly make music with my eyes! I can’t help but keep looking at it.

Thanks everyone. :)
Lisa, no, the print has color. It’s grayscale, then low saturation, then recolored. In areas of the color, I emphasized some parts with more color and darkened the edges of areas for a shadow look.
