Fabric Scanning --a how-to tutorial.

Part Three: Scanning Resources

The information I shared are examples of scanning fabric for use in quilt design, and the examples merely scratch the surface of what you can do with a scanner and your computer. There is always something new to learn, some new technique to try. If you learn any nifty tricks and want to share them with me, please send me an e-mail using the link below. When time permits, I'll try and add new tips when I learn them. Meanwhile, here are some additional sites to help make your scanning experience a good one.

My favorite web site for scanning information is Wayne Fulton's site, A Few Scanning Tips. But a mere few tips it is not. The site is loaded with information, starting with the basics of scanning and moving on to sections like luminance/histogram, histogram practice, the clone tool, and more. Wayne explains some of the popular scanning software, and he includes a long list of related links, including a list of scanner manufacturers.

Michael J. Sullivan's Scanning Tips Online includes information like how to find your scanner's "sweet spot.."

If you are using a scanner to include photos on your web site, check out Adding Images to Your Site. This is a chapter from the book, "Philip and Alex's Guide to Web Publishing," by Philip Greenspun, and it tells you what you need to know about building a photographic library, the different file formats, organizing you images, and adding images to your site. The site also includes many resources.

Scanning tips curtesy of Pacific Lutheran University offers information for scanning text and scanning graphics.

Quilt-Pro offers an online tutorial in fabric scanning for use with Quilt-Pro version 2.

If you have a Hewlett Packard Color Scanjet, Jerry B. Day's "Color Scanning Handbook, Your Guide to Hewlett-Packard Scanjet Color Scanners" comes highly recommended (but I admit, I haven't read it).

The Quilter's Computer Companion bincludes a chapter devoted to putting fabric and fabric-like fills into your computer for use in quilt design. The chapter covers how to get the most from your scanner, different ways to scan fabric for use in different programs, how to mix your own colors and create your own digital fabric fills, and more.

One book I return to again and again is "Real World Scanning and Halftones," by David Blatner, Glenn Fleishman, Stephen F. Roth.
